More than 100 people have died in the flood-hit capital after a deadly surge of water inundated several neighborhoods, including the Washington Monument.
The Washington Monument, the White House and a hotel were all flooded, as were the U.S. Capitol, which sits just a few blocks away.
At least 13 people were killed in the District of Columbia, where the city’s mayor is battling with the governor and other officials for the safety of the city.
It is unclear how many of those fatalities were caused by the storm.
CNN’s Andrew Blake reported from Washington, D.C., and CNN’s Jake Tapper reported from New York.
