Get the latest from ESPN Clicinfo » While most people still associate ‘championship tours’ with the NBA, the sport has taken on a whole new meaning with the arrival of the Big Four.
Now, when you’re in the same spot on the basketball court, the ‘champion’ will likely be a different person altogether.
In 2016, the NBA announced the return of a new era of the championship tour, which was meant to highlight the greatest players of all time.
The tour had been canceled for years because of the financial burden and the fact that there were no marquee matchups.
But that all changed on January 2, when LeBron James took on the Los Angeles Lakers in Los Angeles.
The game drew an average of 6,700 fans and was the first time a champion of the NBA was to play in the Staples Center since the 2001-2002 season.
“We had a lot of history with the Lakers in terms of championships and stuff, and I was excited to see that happen,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
“We were hoping for some big matchups for them, so we really wanted to bring them here, and it was great to see them in the new building, and to be able to see some great moments for them.”
With a game of basketball and a special atmosphere on hand, the fans of the Lakers were not disappointed.
“I’ve been around the league for a long time, and they’re really, really good,” said a fan in the crowd, who asked not to be named.
“They’re really good, and really good at what they do.
They’re a great team, they’re a team that we’re going to miss.
But they’re also the guys that are going to be out there with us for the rest of our lives.”
James was the MVP of the 2016 NBA Finals, and his performance was featured in a film about his life.
When he played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, James was the best player in the league, and the fans in Los.
were able to celebrate the accomplishment in their own way, with a special tribute to James.
The Los Angeles Clippers, the defending champions, played the Celtics in the first round, and after the game, a small group of fans stood in front of the Staples and shouted “Come here, James!
Come here, you’re the best!”
James’ performance was a highlight of the event, and fans were excited to be back at Staples Center.
The NBA and the Lakers have made several attempts to revive the tour.
In 2016, Silver promised to give the players of the Cleveland Cavs a special tour, but no dates have been announced.
In 2017, the league announced a new championship tour in 2021, with the team traveling to New York City for the first game of the new tour.
The Lakers and Celtics also announced a partnership in 2021 that would see the teams travel to L.A. for a special game of hoops.
In 2021, the teams will play in front a sold-out crowd at Staples, and there will be a special video tribute of the two franchises.
The Celtics and Lakers will also play a game in 2020 and 2021.
While the NBA and its partners are trying to revive some of the tradition that is the Big 4, they will still have to contend with some of their own superstars.
On Monday, the Los Angles Clippers and Miami Heat announced they will play their first-ever exhibition game in 2021.
And in 2018, the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets were both eliminated from the playoffs by the Atlanta Hawks in the second round.
While these teams may not be as big a draw as the NBA’s other franchises, the specter of James’ absence is still a major concern for the NBA.
“As a player, you can’t really take anything away from LeBron, but when he goes, you’ve got to be prepared,” said Lakers coach Luke Walton.
“The guys that we’ve been playing with this year, I don’t think we’ll be able get to the level we want to, but we have to be ready for that.”
James’ absence will be especially tough for the Los Lakers, who will be without their star player.
In the preseason, James said he would retire after the 2019-2020 season, but he will play for another team in 2020, and could be a free agent after that.
“He’ll probably be out here for a while,” said Walton.
